The Southampton consortium consists of all the schools and colleges in the city and includes representatives from the two universities. A steering group directs to work of the consortium and manages the work of the consortium co-ordinator. The Consortium oversees the subject networks, an operational group of senior school and college leaders and a group focussed on information advice and guidance. The consortium members are working together to:
• raise the aspirations of all young people in the city
• ensure all young people have access to high quality coherent pathways to good employment
• support all young people of the city to achieve more and aim higher regardless of their starting point
• encourage all young people to develop the skills and attitudes that will prepare them for their future careers
As part of the priority project - A gateway to a world of learning opportunities and as part of the ongoing focus on raising aspirations of young people in the city the 14-19 consortium are seeking volunteer mentors from organisations in the city or local region.
Why:
A significant minority of the young people in the city (around 150 per year group so this means we are aiming eventually to support around 600 14, 15, 16 and 17 year olds on an annual basis) are disadvantaged compared the rest of the cohort they:
• may not have effective support from family members
• may not experience the daily role modelling of adults in consistent employment
• may not understand the world of work and range of opportunities the local economy offers them
• often have poor basic skills in literacy, reading, speaking, IT and functional maths – this further disadvantages them in other subjects despite the fact that they may be very motivated in these other subjects – sport, hairdressing, music etc.
• often lack confidence and self belief
• may believe that the future offers them very little hence they cannot see the purpose of working hard at school and college
The 14-19 consortium would like to have access to as many volunteer mentors as possible and for these mentors to spend about 2 hours a week with a young person who has been identified as needing support.
• Young adults in work and those in the early stages of their careers probably aged 25-35.
• Thoughtful, responsible, caring, supportive, firm, with a clear understanding of the world of work and the attitudes and the attributes employees need to demonstrate on a daily basis
• Fairly good understanding of English, maths and IT
We will provide training and support.
They will meet their mentee on a regular basis, they will support them with their homework in English, maths and IT, take an interest in what they are doing at school or college, celebrate every success whether big or small, talk to them and more importantly get them to talk and describe their achievements and what they are learning, feedback to them and comment about their commitment and motivation.
