Apprenticeships Behind the Scenes with Brazier Interiors
Published: 6th February 2012

This week is National Apprenticeship Week (Feb 6 to 10). Here, Brazier Interiors’ apprentice quantity surveyor, Mitch Weeks, talks about what it is like to be an apprentice and learn the skills of his trade from both his colleagues and college tutors.

“As an apprentice at Brazier Interiors I work four days a week at the company’s offices on the outskirts of the New Forest and train one day a week at City College Southampton.

I couldn’t thank Brazier Interiors enough for offering me this apprenticeship. It’s a great opportunity for me and will hopefully benefit the company long-term.

At work, the tasks I get to do are really varied which I enjoy - everything from liaising with clients and sub-contractors putting together tender documents to working on contracts and undertaking the costs for upcoming jobs.

I also get to do a lot of hands-on work like measuring call offs, gathering dimensions from proposed or existing plans, following my colleagues to meetings and going on site visits to actually see what work is being carried out.

I go to City College every Monday to study my BTEC Diploma in Construction, which will help me to become a quantity surveyor. The tutors help me master things I’m working on at Brazier Interiors and are really easy to get on with.

Brazier Interiors is a lovely environment to be in and I enjoy working with everybody here.”
